Suicide is a tragic end that devastates countless lives each year. Those in pain often feel alone. They see suicide as the only way to end their suffering. But what does the Bible say about suicide? How does God view those who take their own life?

The Sanctity of Life
To understand God’s view of suicide, we must start with how the Bible describes life itself. Scripture teaches that human life is sacred, crafted by God’s own hand. All people are made in His image and have immeasurable worth (Genesis 1:26-27).
God alone has authority over life and death, as explained in Deuteronomy 32:39, “See now that I myself am he. There is no god besides me. I put to death and I bring to life.” Only the Author and Creator of life have the right to end it.
Suicide as Self-Murder
God values life deeply, so Scripture denounces suicide as a mortal sin. God forbids murder in the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:13). He makes no distinction between allowing suicide as justified while condemning homicide.
Sadly, figures like Saul and Judas committed suicide in direct rebellion against God. Pride and a rejection of God led to their self-destruction (1 Samuel 31:4, Matthew 27:5).
The Hopelessness that Leads to Suicide
However, Scripture shows that suicide often stems from deep emotional pain. It can be so severe that it makes people lose hope. In his distress, Job said, “My soul chooses strangling and death rather than my body” (Job 7:15).
The Psalms express agony over enemies’ attacks saying, “My tears have been my food day and night” (Psalm 42:3). Few of us have endured such pain, but it shows suicide often follows despair.
Redemption for All Sins
The Bible condemns murder and suicide. But, it promises that Jesus’ blood covers all sins for those who repent and believe in Him. This is true no matter how heinous the sin or how far we’ve fallen. This absolutely includes suicide.
Jesus said He came to bring hope to “the worst of sinners.” (Matthew 9:13, 1 Timothy 1:15). His salvation extends to all.
Hope and Help for Those Struggling
Rather than condemnation, the Bible offers compassion and encouragement to struggling people. God’s heart is to lift us from darkness into His “marvelous light” of purpose and hope (1 Peter 2:9).
For believers in despair, Scripture shows God’s power to renew us (Philippians 4:13, Romans 12:2). We never walk alone in suffering when anchored in Him. Suicide is never the only option.
